CentOS Stream 10 Now Available for VPS Servers
CentOS Stream 10 has just been added to the available OS templates for VPS servers. This template is available for immediate deployment and can be selected from the “OS Reinstall” menu in the Server Panel for existing servers.
Here’s what’s new in CentOS Stream 10 (“Coughlan”), the version released on December 12, 2024 (upstream to RHEL 10):
🚀 Key New Features & Enhancements — CentOS Stream 10
• Linux Kernel
- Ships with Linux kernel 6.12 LTS, delivering new hardware support and performance improvements
• Programming Languages & Compilers
Includes major upgrades across developer tooling:
- Python 3.12, GCC 14, Go 1.23, Rust 1.82, LLVM 19, Ruby 3.3, Node.js 22, PHP 8.3, and OpenJDK 21
• Databases & Webservers
- Apache HTTP Server 2.4.62, nginx 1.26
- PostgreSQL 16, MariaDB 10.11, MySQL 8.4, and Valkey 7.2 (a fork replacing Redis)
• Desktop Environment & Architecture Support
- Default desktop shell is GNOME 47, with Qt 6.7 support
- Removed X.Org server — Wayland is now default, with Xwayland for legacy compatibility
- Supports architectures: x86_64_v3, ARM v8, IBM Power9, IBM Z (z14) — note the x86 build now targets the v3 microarchitecture baseline, so older CPUs without this support may not work
• Software Management
- Uses DNF 4.20 and RPM 4.19 for package handling
- Moves away from modularity; optional or newer package versions now handled via traditional, non‑modular RPMs
❌ Removed or Deprecated Features
- Xorg server removed (only Xwayland compatibility layer remains)
- Common graphical desktop apps—such as GIMP, LibreOffice, Inkscape, and even Firefox and Thunderbird—are no longer included in BaseOS/AppStream. They’re now delivered via Flatpak, primarily from Flathub or EPEL
- Redis is removed in favor of Valkey 7.2
🛠 Known Issues & Lifecycle
- At initial release, Secure Boot was not supported. This issue was resolved in an update released on July 7, 2025, restoring Secure Boot functionality
- The project lifecycle extends to May 31, 2030, in line with RHEL 10’s Full Support phase. CentOS Stream 10 is expected to be maintained until RHEL 10 enters its maintenance-only phase
⚠️ Hardware & Upgrade Considerations
- Minimum CPU requirement changed: x86_64 v3 baseline is now required, which ensures better optimization but may strand older CPUs. A few users reported warnings about newer v4-capable CPUs being flagged as “deprecated”—likely installer detection bugs rather than genuine lack of support
- Some users consider CentOS Stream as a preview or “next‑minor” of RHEL 10, rather than a fully stable RHEL clone. While it undergoes QA, it’s not identified as production-grade by Red Hat; RHEL is still recommended for enterprise-grade deployment
