Debian 13 (Trixie) Now Available for VPS Servers

Debian 13 (Trixie) has just been added to the available OS templates for VPS servers. This template is available for immediate deployment and can be selected from the “OS Reinstall” menu in the Server Panel for existing servers.

Here’s what’s new and noteworthy in Debian 13 “Trixie”, which was officially released on August 9, 2025 :

1. New and Updated Architectures

   • Official support for RISC‑V (riscv64) joins the roster of supported architectures.
   • Supported platforms now include:
   • amd64, arm64, armel, armhf, ppc64el, riscv64, and s390x.
   • Partial 32-bit (i386) support remains only as a userland compatibility option on amd64; full support for i386 and armel is effectively deprecated.

2. Kernel and Package Management

   • Ships with the Linux 6.12 LTS kernel, supported through December 2026.
   • Introduces APT 3.0 as the default package management tool.

3. Security Enhancements & Hardening

   • Built-in defenses against ROP (Return-Oriented Programming) and COP/JOP (Call-Oriented Programming) attacks on amd64 and arm64 systems.
   • Helps with source-of-build reproducibility—great for improving distribution trust and integrity.

4. Boot, Networking & System Improvements

   • Adds support for HTTP Boot, enabling network-based booting scenarios.
   • Introduces run0, a systemd-based privilege elevation tool that requests the user’s password instead of root’s.
   • Default behavior now mounts /tmp as a tmpfs (RAM-based) storage—which is automatically cleaned:
   • /tmp files are removed after 10 days of inactivity.
   • /var/tmp files are cleaned after 30 days.

5. Manuals, Translations & Documentation

   • Improved translations for man pages, aiding usability for non-English users.
   • Enhanced Qt WebEngine browsers now include spell-checking features.

6. Desktop Environments & UI

   • KDE Plasma 6.3.6 debuts (Qt 6.8.2, KDE Frameworks 6.13), replacing Plasma 5.27.5.
   • Includes fresh versions of KDE Gear apps (KDE PIM suite 24.12.3, Gear apps 25.04.3).
   • Also features refurbished releases for major DEs:
   • GNOME 48, Cinnamon 6.4, Xfce 4.20, LXQt 2.1, MATE 1.26.1, and LXDE 13.

7. Scale of the Release

   • A massive update: ~14,100 new packages, ~8,840 removed, with 44,326 package updates overall.
   • Total size is approximately 403 GB across all archives.

8. 5-Year Support Lifecycle

   • Full support until August 9, 2028, followed by Long Term Support (LTS) until June 30, 2030.
