What’s New in Rocky Linux 10?

Here’s what’s new and notable in Rocky Linux 10.0, code‑named “Red Quartz”, which became generally available on June 11, 2025:

🚀 Release & Support Schedule

  • Launch date: June 11, 2025
  • Kernel version: Linux 6.12.x series (e.g. 6.12.0‑55.x)
  • Support lifecycle:
  • Full (active) updates until May 31, 2030
  • Security-only support through May 31, 2035

🛠 Architecture & Hardware Support

  • Dropped support for x86‑64‑v2 microarchitecture (older Intel/AMD chips)—Rocky 10 requires at least x86‑64‑v3 (Haswell and newer)
  • 32-bit packages removed entirely—legacy 32‑bit apps must be used via containers or 64‑bit compatibility layers
  • New platform support:
  • 64-bit RISC‑V (e.g. StarFive VisionFive 2, QEMU, SiFive P550)
  • Existing platforms: x86_64-v3, aarch64 (ARM64), ppc64le, s390x

🧩 Installer & System Defaults

  • Default configuration during install: created administrative user with sudo—root account disabled by default, unless explicitly enabled
  • Graphical remote access: RDP replaces VNC as the default protocol during installation and system GUI sessions

🌐 Networking Overhaul

  • Legacy DHCP client removed; DHCP is now built into NetworkManager
  • ISC DHCP server replaced by Kea DHCP
  • ifcfg‑rh network scripts and ifup/ifdown removed—NetworkManager and nmcli/nmtui are mandatory now
  • Network teaming deprecated, replaced by bonding configuration options

🖥 Desktop Environment & GUI Changes

  • Wayland becomes the default display server, fully replacing X.Org. Xwayland is retained for legacy X11 support
  • Several GUI apps removed in line with RHEL 10 upstream:
  • Firefox, LibreOffice, Evolution, Inkscape, Xsane, TigerVNC, webkit2 etc.
  • Users are expected to rely on Flatpak or third-party packages like EPEL for replacements

🧰 Software Stack: Languages & Tools

Rocky Linux 10 includes upgraded core languages, databases, and developer tooling:

  • PHP 8.3, Python 3.12, Nginx 1.26
  • PostgreSQL 16.8, MySQL 8.4, MariaDB 10.11, Valkey 8.0
  • Debuggers: GDB 14.2, Valgrind 3.23.0, SystemTap 5.1, Dyninst 12.3.0, elfutils 0.192, libabigail 2.6
  • Monitoring & performance: Performance Co‑pilot 6.3.0, Grafana 10.2.6
  • Build toolsets: LLVM Toolset 19.1.7, Rust 1.84.1, Go 1.23

🔐 Release Engineering & Security

  • Build system for Rocky Linux 10 has shifted from Peridot to Koji, enabling features like IMA (Integrity Measurement Architecture) signing at the kernel level—enhancing file attestation and security

⚠ Upgrade Guidance

  • Upgrading in-place from Rocky Linux 8 or 9 is not supported—a clean installation is required to move to Rocky Linux 10

✅ Quick Feature Summary

Area Rocky Linux 10 Highlights
Support & Kernel Linux 6.12, support through 2035
Hardware & Archs x86_64-v3 only, plus ARM64, RISC-V, Power, IBM Z
Installer Defaults Root disabled by default, sudo user setup, RDP over VNC
Networking NM-native DHCP client, Kea server, and NetworkManager-only
Desktop Wayland default, major GUI apps removed, Flatpak/EPEL encouraged
Toolchain Latest compiler, runtime, database tooling
Security & Build Koji builds, kernel IMA signing
Upgrade Path Fresh install required from RL 8/9
TL;DR

Rocky Linux 10 “Red Quartz” marks a clear break from legacy support: it targets modern platforms (x86_64-v3, ARM, RISC‑V), adopts Wayland and RDP, modernizes networking, drops 32-bit and legacy apps, updates toolchains, strengthens build integrity—and requires a fresh install for upgrades.
